watched: married life.  it would have made a great hitchcock thriller: a businessman, in love with a beautiful, damaged creature half his age, plans to poison his wife in order to avoid breaking her heart when he leaves her for the nymphet.  the very night he finally executes, his mistress leaves him for the arms of his scheming best friend, and everything he ever had slips away.  likely riveting in the hands of hitchock, but ira sachs directs the suspense right out of this genial film, redeeming it only a bit in the last few minutes with the haunting notions of marital sacrifice and the inscrutability of other minds, no matter how familiar.  how chilling is this idea, though?: poisoning someone without their knowledge, and sitting with them as they slowly realise that you’ve ended their life.
